Leather Footwear Market Size in Morocco

In 2021, the Moroccan leather footwear market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, leather footwear production expanded rapidly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 9.5% against the previous year. Leather footwear production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of leather footwear was finally on the rise to reach X tons after four years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 6.2% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, leather footwear exports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of leather footwear exports from Morocco, together accounting for 54% of total exports. Italy, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Congo, Mauritania, Japan and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +42.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Spain ($X), Germany ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest markets for leather footwear exported from Morocco worldwide, with a combined 66% share of total exports. France, Cote d'Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Congo, Mauritania, Japan and Mali lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 25%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +29.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average leather footwear export price stood at $X per kg in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 15%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per kg. From 2019 to 2021, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per kg), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Leather Footwear Imports

Imports into Morocco

In 2021, leather footwear imports into Morocco surged to X tons, with an increase of 32% on the year before. Overall, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 50%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, leather footwear imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Turkey (X tons), China (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of leather footwear imports to Morocco, together comprising 78% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Turkey (with a CAGR of +48.0%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest leather footwear suppliers to Morocco were China ($X), Italy ($X) and Turkey ($X), together accounting for 64% of total imports.

Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per kg in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per kg), while the price for Turkey ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.
