In value terms, iron and steel wire exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 1,830% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Mauritania (X tons), France (X tons) and Senegal (X tons) were the main destinations of iron and steel wire exports from Morocco, with a combined 92% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Kenya, Mali and Gabon, which together accounted for a further 5.5%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Kenya (with a CAGR of +258.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, overseas purchases of iron and steel wire decreased by -3% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, iron and steel wire imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
Turkey (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) were the main suppliers of iron and steel wire imports to Morocco, together comprising 74% of total imports. Portugal, China, Thailand, Italy and Egypt lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Thailand (with a CAGR of +681.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
