Kaolin Market Size in Morocco

After two years of growth, the Moroccan kaolin market decreased by -44.6% to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, consumption saw a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, kaolin exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 65%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Tunisia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of kaolin exports from Morocco, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Tunisia (with a CAGR of +41.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Algeria ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for kaolin exported from Morocco worldwide, with a combined 96% share of total exports.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, the countries with the highest prices were Portugal ($X per ton) and Saudi Arabia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Tunisia ($X per ton) and Algeria ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

Imports into Morocco

After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of kaolin and kaolinic clays increased by 20% to X tons in 2021. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 28%. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, kaolin imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed in certain years. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of kaolin to Morocco, accounting for a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, kaolin imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X tons), more than tenfold. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 5.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK totaled +8.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+7.1% per year) and Portugal (+11.5% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) constituted the largest supplier of kaolin and kaolinic clays to Morocco, comprising 72% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 9.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with an 8.8% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the UK stood at +6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (+8.1% per year) and Spain (-12.4% per year).

In 2021, the average kaolin import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
