In value terms, leather exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The exports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Italy (X tons) was the main destination for leather exports from Morocco, accounting for a 71% share of total exports. Moreover, leather exports to Italy exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), fivefold. Portugal (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Italy stood at +6.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+0.7% per year) and Portugal (+5.4% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for leather exports from Morocco, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Spain ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Portugal, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Italy totaled -1.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (-4.0% per year) and Portugal (+6.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the average leather export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 14% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt contraction. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Turkey ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Imports into Morocco
In 2021, the amount of leather imported into Morocco fell to X tons, dropping by -6.3% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest leather supplier to Morocco, with a 57% share of total imports. Moreover, leather imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), threefold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 13% share.

In 2021, the average leather import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Portugal ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
