Maize Market Size in Morocco

The Moroccan maize market shrank sharply to $X in 2022, waning by -33.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed significant growth. Maize consumption peaked at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Maize Production in Morocco

In value terms, maize production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate a noticeable curtailment. In value terms, maize exports fell to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a mild shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 25%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons), Spain (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of maize exports from Morocco, together accounting for 82% of total exports. The Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +42.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for maize exported from Morocco were the UK ($X), Spain ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports. The Netherlands, Switzerland, Germany and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 16%.

Germany, with a CAGR of +40.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average maize export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 17%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Switzerland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Portugal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+7.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, purchases abroad of maize (green) increased by 62% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 219% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, maize imports soared to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 182% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of maize to Morocco, accounting for a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, maize imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, France (X kg), fourfold.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain amounted to +39.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-33.5% per year) and Germany (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of maize (green) to Morocco, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with a 16% share of total imports.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Spain stood at +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-33.1% per year) and Germany (0.0% per year).

The average maize import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 13% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a modest expansion from 2015 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% over the last seven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, maize import price decreased by -30.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 27% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
