Melon Seed Market Size in Morocco

After two years of growth, the Moroccan melon seed market decreased by -29% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted strong growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then declined sharply in the following year.

In 2022, overseas shipments of melon seed decreased by -41.9% to X kg, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports saw a pronounced decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when exports increased by 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, melon seed exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a perceptible descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 51% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

The Netherlands (X kg) was the main destination for melon seed exports from Morocco, accounting for a 92% share of total exports. Moreover, melon seed exports to the Netherlands exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, France (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Netherlands stood at -3.1%.

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) remains the key foreign market for melon seed exports from Morocco, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 25% share of total exports.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the Netherlands totaled +4.9%.

The average melon seed export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -13.4% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to the Netherlands amounted to $X per ton.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Netherlands (+8.2%).

Imports into Morocco

In 2022, the amount of melon seed imported into Morocco declined significantly to X tons, waning by -46% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 81% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, melon seed imports declined remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a strong expansion from 2015 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the last seven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Peru (X tons) constituted the largest melon seed supplier to Morocco, with a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, melon seed imports from Peru exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, India (X kg), threefold. Spain (X kg) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Peru stood at +35.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: India (+58.2% per year) and Spain (+3.7% per year).

In value terms, Peru ($X) constituted the largest supplier of melon seed to Morocco, comprising 49% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 13% share.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from Peru stood at +34.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: France (-8.7% per year) and Spain (+20.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average melon seed import price stood at $X per kg in 2022, increasing by 32% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated a noticeable increase from 2015 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last seven-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, melon seed import price decreased by -7.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the average import price increased by 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per kg. From 2021 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per kg), while the price for Jordan ($X per kg) was amongst the lowest.

From 2015 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Spain (+16.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
