Virgin Olive Oil Market Size in Morocco

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in the Moroccan virgin olive oil market, when its value decreased by -0.1% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -8.1% against 2018 indices. Exports from Morocco

In 2022, approx. X tons of virgin olive oil were exported from Morocco; declining by -12.3% against the previous year. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 144% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, virgin olive oil exports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Spain (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of virgin olive oil exports from Morocco, with a combined 84% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Italy (with a CAGR of +36.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for virgin olive oil exported from Morocco were the United States ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 78% share of total exports.

Italy, with a CAGR of +38.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Morocco

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of virgin olive oil decreased by -8.5% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 623%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, virgin olive oil imports fell significantly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 759%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tunisia (X tons), Spain (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of virgin olive oil imports to Morocco, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +19.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X) were the largest virgin olive oil suppliers to Morocco, with a combined 100% share of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Tunisia, with a CAGR of +22.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average virgin olive oil import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the average import price increased by 39%. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the price for Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+2.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
