Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a deep contraction. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when imports increased by 273% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, pig iron imports rose notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 137% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of pig iron to Morocco, with a 58% share of total imports. Moreover, pig iron imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Russia (X tons), threefold. The UK (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Russia (+2.2% per year) and the UK (+45.2% per year).

In value terms, Russia ($X), the Netherlands ($X) and the UK ($X) were the largest pig iron suppliers to Morocco, together comprising 86% of total imports.
