The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +95.4% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then dropped in the following year.

Spain (X tons), Turkey (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of plastic container exports from Morocco, together comprising 66% of total exports.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Netherlands ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Bulgaria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Egypt (+27.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

After four years of growth, overseas purchases of plastic containers decreased by -10% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In 2021, Spain (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of plastic container to Morocco, accounting for a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, plastic container imports from Spain exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the Netherlands (X tons), fivefold. The third position in this ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates (X tons), with a 9.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Spain stood at +11.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the Netherlands (+41.4% per year) and the United Arab Emirates (+20.4% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($X) constituted the largest supplier of plastic containers to Morocco, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by the United Arab Emirates ($X), with a 9.7% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Spain totaled +7.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United Arab Emirates (+18.7% per year) and France (-5.5% per year).

In 2021, the average plastic container import price amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 11% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was the Czech Republic ($X per ton), while the price for the Netherlands ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
