Potato Market Size in Morocco

Mauritania (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Morocco, with a 39% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Mauritania exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Burkina Faso (X tons), threefold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Mauritania stood at +33.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Burkina Faso (+22.6% per year) and Spain (+1.0% per year).

In value terms, Mauritania ($X), France ($X) and Spain ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for potato exported from Morocco worldwide, together accounting for 69% of total exports.

Among the main countries of destination, Mauritania, with a CAGR of +45.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 6.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mali (+13.2%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Morocco

Potato imports into Morocco fell dramatically to X tons in 2021, waning by -40.3% compared with the year before. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 38%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

In value terms, potato imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a noticeable decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Netherlands (X tons) constituted the largest potato supplier to Morocco, accounting for a 59% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from the Netherlands exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Denmark (X tons), fourfold. The third position in this ranking was held by the UK (X tons), with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Netherlands was relatively modest. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+25.7% per year) and the UK (-9.7% per year).

In value terms, the Netherlands ($X) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Morocco, comprising 61% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by France, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from the Netherlands totaled -2.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Denmark (+24.3% per year) and France (+3.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average potato import price amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the highest price was recorded for prices from Denmark ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the price for the UK ($X per ton) and the Netherlands ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (-1.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
