After four years of growth, the Moroccan sheepskin and lambskin market decreased by -1.1% to $X in 2021. In general, consumption, however, saw a drastic downturn. In 2021, number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production in Morocco expanded slightly to X heads, with an increase of 4% against 2020. This number increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 9.8%. The number of animals slaughtered for sheepskin and lambskin production peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports from Morocco
For the fourth year in a row, Morocco recorded decline in shipments abroad of sheep or lamb skins (without wool), which decreased by -50.6% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw a dramatic shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 1,773%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin exports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 674% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
France (X tons) was the main destination for sheepskin and lambskin exports from Morocco, accounting for a 67% share of total exports. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X kg), twofold.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France amounted to -11.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (-25.3% per year) and Spain (-8.6% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) remains the key foreign market for sheep or lamb skins (without wool) exports from Morocco, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by France ($X), with a 10% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Italy totaled -35.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (-33.1% per year) and Spain (-5.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sheepskin and lambskin export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a deep downturn. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Spain (+3.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Morocco
Sheepskin and lambskin imports into Morocco expanded sharply to X tons in 2021, rising by 15% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, sheepskin and lambskin imports totaled $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 61% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, France (X tons) constituted the largest sheepskin and lambskin supplier to Morocco, with a 43% share of total imports. Moreover, sheepskin and lambskin imports from France exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the UK (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Australia (X tons), with a 9.8% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from France stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the UK (-8.8% per year) and Australia (-6.5% per year).
In value terms, Australia ($X), France ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest sheepskin and lambskin suppliers to Morocco, together comprising 73% of total imports.
Australia, with a CAGR of -12.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In 2021, the average sheepskin and lambskin import price amounted to $X per ton, waning by -3.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 193% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was New Zealand ($X per ton), while the price for France ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
