Baking Soda Market Size in Morocco

In 2021, the Moroccan baking soda market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, the total consumption indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. After six years of growth, shipments abroad of baking soda decreased by -92.9% to X tons in 2021. Overall, exports, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 575%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.

In value terms, baking soda exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 358%. The exports peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted dramatically in the following year.

Exports by Country

Niger (X tons) was the main destination for baking soda exports from Morocco, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, baking soda exports to Niger exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Mauritania (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Niger totaled +54.3%.

In value terms, Niger ($X) remains the key foreign market for baking soda exports from Morocco, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritania ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Niger amounted to +36.3%.

In 2021, the average baking soda export price amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 4.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average export price increased by 66%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably for the major external markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Niger ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritania totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Mauritania (+4.0%).

In 2021, the amount of baking soda imported into Morocco fell slightly to X tons, shrinking by -4.7% compared with the year before. In general, total imports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -29.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 47% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Overall, total imports indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -37.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Turkey (X tons) constituted the largest baking soda supplier to Morocco, accounting for a 38% share of total imports. Moreover, baking soda imports from Turkey exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Italy (X tons), twofold. Spain (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Turkey amounted to +24.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Italy (+17.0% per year) and Spain (-9.1% per year).

In value terms, the largest baking soda suppliers to Morocco were Turkey ($X), Spain ($X) and Italy ($X), with a combined 65% share of total imports. Romania, Germany, China, Ireland and Portugal lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 11%.

Romania, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average baking soda import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average import price increased by 18%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for Romania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+4.5%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
