Over the period under review, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 7,823%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, sweet potato exports reached $X in 2021. Overall, exports posted a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 4,858%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Portugal (X tons) was the main destination for sweet potato exports from Morocco, accounting for a 77% share of total exports. Moreover, sweet potato exports to Portugal exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the Netherlands (X tons), sevenfold. France (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 2.1% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to Portugal amounted to +46.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+17.0% per year) and France (+27.5% per year).
In value terms, Portugal ($X) remains the key foreign market for sweet potatoes exports from Morocco, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the Netherlands ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by the Czech Republic, with a 2.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Portugal totaled +17.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the Netherlands (+27.2% per year) and the Czech Republic (-15.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average sweet potato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -10.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 130% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Gambia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the Czech Republic (+16.9%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Morocco
In 2021, purchases abroad of sweet potatoes was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports showed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 13,200% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Imports by Country
In 2021, Portugal (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of sweet potato to Morocco, accounting for a 78% share of total imports. Moreover, sweet potato imports from Portugal exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Spain (X tons), fourfold. Egypt (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 16% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Portugal stood at +73.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Spain (+81.0% per year) and Egypt (+144.6% per year).
In value terms, Portugal ($X) constituted the largest supplier of sweet potatoes to Morocco, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 17% share of total imports. It was followed by Spain, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Portugal totaled +111.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Egypt (+173.7% per year) and Spain (+69.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average sweet potato import price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -41.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 308%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Belgium (+86.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
