The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 16%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, tomato exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +67.2% against 2016 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 17% against the previous year. France (X tons) was the main destination for tomato exports from Morocco, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, tomato exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, the UK (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X tons), with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to France stood at -1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+16.8% per year) and Spain (+16.0% per year).

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for tomato exports from Morocco, comprising 51% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by the Netherlands, with an 8.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to France was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+21.8% per year) and the Netherlands (+21.3% per year).

The average tomato export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.9% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.9%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Imports into Morocco

In 2021, supplies from abroad of tomatoes increased by 43% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after five years of decline. Overall, imports showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 148% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, tomato imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 58% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

France (X tons), Spain (X tons) and the Netherlands (X tons) were the main suppliers of tomato imports to Morocco, together accounting for 100% of total imports.
