Exports from Myanmar

In 2022, shipments abroad of beer decreased by -85% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after five years of growth. In general, exports showed a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 6,778% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beer exports fell remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 3,603% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for beer exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 76% share of total exports. Moreover, beer exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, India (X tons), fourfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China amounted to +1.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-12.9% per year) and Bangladesh (+15.4% per year).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Bangladesh (+9.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

After three years of growth, overseas purchases of beer decreased by -99.7% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a precipitous decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 19%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, beer imports shrank notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a significant decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 25%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, Thailand (X tons) was the main supplier of beer to Myanmar, accounting for a approx. 97% share of total imports.
