Common Pottery Market Size in Myanmar

In 2022, the Myanmar's common pottery market increased by 1.3% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. Common pottery consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, shipments abroad of common pottery was finally on the rise to reach X kg after two years of decline. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 86%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports continue to indicate a modest increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 171%. The exports peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X kg), Germany (X kg) and India (X kg) were the main destinations of common pottery exports from Myanmar, with a combined 87% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by India (with a CAGR of +43.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for common pottery exports from Myanmar, comprising 48% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with a 6.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany stood at -9.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+21.9% per year) and Australia (+8.0% per year).

In 2022, the average common pottery export price amounted to $X per ton, declining by -1.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average export price increased by 222%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Saudi Arabia (+85.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Myanmar

In 2022, overseas purchases of common pottery decreased by -1.6% to X tons, falling for the third consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 311% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery imports reached $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, China (X tons) constituted the largest common pottery supplier to Myanmar, with a 90% share of total imports. Moreover, common pottery imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +58.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+32.4% per year) and Vietnam (+34.5% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common pottery to Myanmar, comprising 90% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 6.3% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China amounted to +37.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+14.1% per year) and Vietnam (+17.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average common pottery import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 3% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average import price increased by 42%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Vietnam ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by France (+5.4%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
