In value terms, ethanol exports plummeted to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 140,410%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X litres) was the main destination for ethanol exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 88% share of total exports. Moreover, ethanol exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, South Korea (X litres), more than tenfold. Togo (X litres) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 4.8% share.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Thailand stood at +78.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+123.5% per year) and Togo (0.0% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for ethyl alcohol exports from Myanmar, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Korea ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports. It was followed by Togo, with a 4.9% share.

From 2015 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Thailand totaled +74.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Korea (+121.7% per year) and Togo (0.0% per year).

In 2022, the average ethanol export price amounted to $X per litre, waning by -15% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a noticeable setback. For the fourth year in a row, Myanmar recorded decline in purchases abroad of ethyl alcohol, which decreased by 0% to X litres in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 2,062% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, ethanol imports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, imports posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 2,051%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Thailand (X litres), the UK (X litres) and China (X litres) were the main suppliers of ethanol imports to Myanmar.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by the UK (with a CAGR of +139.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Thailand ($X) constituted the largest supplier of ethyl alcohol to Myanmar, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 25% share of total imports.
