Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 608%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, starch glue imports reduced notably to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 622% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of starch glue to Myanmar, with a 89% share of total imports. Moreover, starch glue imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), more than tenfold. Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 1.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from China totaled +28.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+48.3% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+27.3% per year).

In value terms, China ($X) constituted the largest supplier of glues based on starches, dextrins or other modified starches to Myanmar, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Taiwan (Chinese), with a 1% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from China stood at +15.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+51.0% per year) and Taiwan (Chinese) (+10.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the average starch glue import price amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a abrupt decline. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the price for Taiwan (Chinese) ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malaysia (+1.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
