Graphite Market Size in Myanmar

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Myanmar's graphite market, when its value decreased by -48.5% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. Graphite consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Graphite exports from Myanmar skyrocketed to X kg in 2020, rising by 441% compared with 2019. In general, exports, however, showed a sharp slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 3,384%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, graphite exports skyrocketed to $X in 2020. Overall, exports, however, recorded a precipitous descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 4,458% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2020, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Thailand (X kg) was the main destination for graphite exports from Myanmar, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

Imports into Myanmar

After three years of growth, purchases abroad of graphite (natural) decreased by -56.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 1,018%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2020, and then fell significantly in the following year.

In value terms, graphite imports reduced markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 678%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, China (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Myanmar, with a 55% share of total imports. Moreover, graphite imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Singapore (X tons), threefold. South Korea (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from China totaled +12.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Singapore (+12.7% per year) and South Korea (-8.5% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X) constituted the largest supplier of graphite to Myanmar, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Singapore amounted to +39.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-5.4% per year) and Thailand (+10.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average graphite import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 52% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average import price increased by 165%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+23.3%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
