The exports peaked at X tons in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

In value terms, wire and cable exports reached $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a significant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 1,080%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

China (X tons) was the main destination for wire and cable exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 57% share of total exports. Moreover, wire and cable exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Vietnam (X tons), with a 12% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume to China amounted to +100.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Thailand (+224.9% per year) and Vietnam (+140.6% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for wire and cable exported from Myanmar were Thailand ($X), China ($X) and Vietnam ($X), with a combined 82% share of total exports.

Thailand, with a CAGR of +202.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average wire and cable export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a tangible expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to South Korea ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into Myanmar

In 2021, overseas purchases of insulated wire and cable decreased by -44.8% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after eight years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 87% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, wire and cable imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 135% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Vietnam (X tons) and Thailand (X tons) were the main suppliers of wire and cable imports to Myanmar, with a combined 82% share of total imports. These countries were followed by South Korea, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, which together accounted for a further 17%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Indonesia (with a CAGR of +78.2%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
