The Philippines (X tons) was the main destination for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Myanmar, with a 94% share of total exports. Moreover, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports to the Philippines exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Thailand (X kg), more than tenfold.

From 2012 to 2016, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the Philippines stood at -5.7%.

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) remains the key foreign market for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences exports from Myanmar, comprising 99% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 1.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2016, the average annual growth rate of value to the Philippines amounted to -1.1%.

In 2021, purchases abroad of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences decreased by -30.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, imports, however, showed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 2,677%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 4,189%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, the Philippines (X tons) constituted the largest manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences supplier to Myanmar, accounting for a 67% share of total imports. Moreover, manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences imports from the Philippines exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), threefold. Lao People's Democratic Republic (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the Philippines totaled +22.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+142.5% per year) and Lao People's Democratic Republic (+29.0% per year).

In value terms, the Philippines ($X) constituted the largest supplier of manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences to Myanmar, comprising 68% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lao People's Democratic Republic ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 10% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from the Philippines stood at +20.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Lao People's Democratic Republic (+44.4% per year) and Thailand (+103.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average import price for manufactured tobacco, extracts and essences stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the average import price increased by 54%. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+23.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
