Potato Market Size in Myanmar

The Myanmar's potato market shrank modestly to $X in 2021, dropping by -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the market value increased by 8.6% against the previous year. Potato consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Potato Production in Myanmar

In value terms, potato production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 17%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The average yield of potatoes in Myanmar was estimated at X tons per ha in 2021, therefore, remained relatively stable against the year before. Over the period under review, the yield recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the yield increased by 2.2% against the previous year. The potato yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021. In 2021, the amount of potatoes exported from Myanmar declined modestly to X tons, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, exports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, potato exports amounted to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 179% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Thailand (X tons) was the main destination for potato exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 90% share of total exports. Moreover, potato exports to Thailand exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Malaysia (X tons), tenfold.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Thailand stood at +16.2%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+10.9% per year) and China (-19.5% per year).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the key foreign market for potato exports from Myanmar, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with a 15% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Thailand totaled +13.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Malaysia (+17.1% per year) and China (-30.4% per year).

In 2021, the average potato export price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Malaysia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of potatoes decreased by -73.9% to X tons, falling for the seventh consecutive year after three years of growth. In general, imports saw a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 220%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, potato imports fell sharply to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 164%. Imports peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of potato to Myanmar, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, potato imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Thailand (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the Netherlands (X tons), with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from India totaled -6.6%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (+19.4% per year) and the Netherlands (-5.5% per year).

In value terms, India ($X), Malaysia ($X) and Thailand ($X) were the largest potato suppliers to Myanmar, together comprising 71% of total imports.

In terms of the main suppliers, Malaysia, with a CAGR of +13.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

Import Prices by Country

The average potato import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the price for Bangladesh ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Australia (+17.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
