Sesame Seed Market Size in Myanmar

In 2022, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of sesame seed, when their volume decreased by -40.9% to X tons. In general, exports continue to indicate a perceptible shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 91% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, sesame seed exports reduced remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a perceptible contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 90% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons) was the main destination for sesame seed exports from Myanmar, with a 79% share of total exports. Moreover, sesame seed exports to China exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Taiwan (Chinese) (X tons), more than tenfold. Thailand (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 5.4% share.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the average export price increased by 73%. In 2022, approx. X tons of sesame seed were imported into Myanmar; reducing by -67.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 216% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
