Unmanufactured Tobacco Market Size in Myanmar

For the fourth year in a row, the Myanmar's unmanufactured tobacco market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 3.6% to $X in 2022. Overall, consumption, however, showed a abrupt decrease. Unmanufactured tobacco consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Production in Myanmar

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 88% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The average yield of tobacco (unmanufactured) in Myanmar contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year's figure. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 2.9%. The unmanufactured tobacco yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2021, and then shrank modestly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of tobacco (unmanufactured) were harvested in Myanmar; reducing by -2.3% compared with 2021. In general, the harvested area, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 14%. The unmanufactured tobacco harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports from Myanmar

In 2022, shipments abroad of tobacco (unmanufactured) decreased by -73.8% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after six years of growth. In general, exports recorded a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 210% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco exports dropped notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a dramatic slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 194%. The exports peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

Indonesia (X tons), India (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main destinations of unmanufactured tobacco exports from Myanmar, with a combined 94% share of total exports. Taiwan (Chinese) lagged somewhat behind, comprising a further 4.2%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Taiwan (Chinese) (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline.

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for tobacco (unmanufactured) exports from Myanmar, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by India ($X), with a 24% share of total exports. It was followed by China, with a 5.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Indonesia stood at -16.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-27.2% per year) and China (-9.0% per year).

The average unmanufactured tobacco export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, reducing by -41.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price faced a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the average export price increased by 28%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Greece (+18.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Unmanufactured Tobacco Imports

Imports into Myanmar

In 2022, approx. X tons of tobacco (unmanufactured) were imported into Myanmar; growing by 65% compared with the year before. In general, imports, however, saw a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 82%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, unmanufactured tobacco imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 99.9% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The United Arab Emirates (X tons), Jordan (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports to Myanmar, together comprising 89% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Jordan (with a CAGR of +47.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Jordan ($X), Germany ($X) and Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest unmanufactured tobacco suppliers to Myanmar, with a combined 72% share of total imports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +138.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average unmanufactured tobacco import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -13.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the average import price increased by 106%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Germany (+128.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
