Mobile Phone Market Size in Myanmar

The Myanmar's mobile phone market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -12.4% against the previous year. Overall, consumption showed a deep contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, after five years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of mobile phones, when their volume increased by 57% to X units. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 187% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mobile phone exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 590% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Singapore (X units) was the main destination for mobile phone exports from Myanmar, with a 73% share of total exports. Moreover, mobile phone exports to Singapore exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Slovakia (X units), ninefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Thailand (X units), with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Singapore totaled +38.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (-33.1% per year) and Thailand (+56.8% per year).

In value terms, Singapore ($X) emerged as the key foreign market for mobile phones exports from Myanmar, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Slovakia ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Thailand, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Singapore stood at +22.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Slovakia (+160.8% per year) and Thailand (+45.4% per year).

The average mobile phone export price stood at $X per unit in 2022, increasing by 55% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a moderate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 141%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Slovakia ($X per unit), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Slovakia (+290.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

Imports into Myanmar

In 2022, overseas purchases of mobile phones decreased by -99.8% to X units, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. In general, imports, however, recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 4,032% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X units in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, mobile phone imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 4,878%. Imports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Thailand (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of mobile phone imports to Myanmar.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by China (with a CAGR of +61.6%).

In value terms, Thailand ($X) and China ($X) were the largest mobile phone suppliers to Myanmar.

Among the main suppliers, China, with a CAGR of +53.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review.

In 2022, the average mobile phone import price amounted to $X per unit, surging by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable setback.
