In 2021, shipments abroad of wood charcoal decreased by -53.8% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. In general, exports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 60% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal exports fell dramatically to $X in 2021. Overall, exports saw a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 47%. The exports peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Thailand (X tons) was the main destination for wood charcoal exports from Myanmar, accounting for a 97% share of total exports. It was followed by Japan (X tons), with a 1.6% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Thailand was relatively modest. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-2.4% per year) and China (-42.1% per year).
In value terms, Thailand ($X) remains the key foreign market for wood charcoal exports from Myanmar, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value to Thailand totaled +4.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-6.0% per year) and China (-38.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The average wood charcoal export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -4.6% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 36% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2021, the average export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of wood charcoal decreased by -87.2% to X tons, falling for the fifth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood charcoal imports fell markedly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a sharp contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Korea (X tons), Thailand (X tons) and China (X tons) were the main suppliers of wood charcoal imports to Myanmar, together accounting for 83% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Thailand (with a CAGR of +3.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline.
In value terms, South Korea ($X) constituted the largest supplier of wood charcoal to Myanmar, comprising 64% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Thailand ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 13% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from South Korea totaled -5.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Thailand (-3.9% per year) and Singapore (-41.9% per year).
