Banana Market Size in Nepal

The Nepalese banana market shrank to $X in 2022, reducing by -4.7% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank in the following year.

Banana Production in Nepal

In value terms, banana production declined modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In 2022, banana exports from Nepal contracted modestly to X kg, approximately equating 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 196% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X kg in 2021, and then contracted slightly in the following year.

In value terms, banana exports stood at $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 176% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

India (X kg) was the main destination for banana exports from Nepal, accounting for a approx. 100% share of total exports.

Banana imports into Nepal fell significantly to X tons in 2022, which is down by -20.7% against the year before. In general, imports, however, posted a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 325%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.

In value terms, banana imports fell dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 368% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main banana supplier to Nepal, with a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.
