Blanket Market Size in Nepal

Exports from Nepal

In 2022, exports of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) from Nepal fell significantly to X tons, declining by -15.2% on 2021 figures. In general, exports showed a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 140%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, blanket exports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 191% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

The United States (X tons), Singapore (X tons) and the UK (X tons) were the main destinations of blanket exports from Nepal, together accounting for 41% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for the UK (with a CAGR of +25.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) exports from Nepal, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports. It was followed by the UK, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to France totaled +6.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-0.2% per year) and the UK (+10.7% per year).

The average blanket export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, waning by -15.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the average export price increased by 143% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Singapore ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to France (+38.0%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nepal

Blanket imports into Nepal skyrocketed to X tons in 2022, with an increase of 17% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 115% against the previous year. Imports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, blanket imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest blanket supplier to Nepal, with a 68% share of total imports. Moreover, blanket imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), twofold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India amounted to +50.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+0.4% per year) and Qatar (+53.9% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) to Nepal, comprising 92% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 44% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from India amounted to +40.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+2.5% per year) and Qatar (+53.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The average blanket import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -23.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was China ($X per ton), while the price for Qatar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by China (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
