Common Pottery Market Size in Nepal

The Nepalese common pottery market reduced markedly to $X in 2022, falling by -48.4% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a prominent increase. Common pottery consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from Nepal

In 2022, shipments abroad of common pottery was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports posted a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 349%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 385% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons), the United States (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main destinations of common pottery exports from Nepal, together comprising 68% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Germany (with a CAGR of +86.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), the United States ($X) and Italy ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for common pottery exported from Nepal worldwide, together accounting for 55% of total exports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +83.3%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The average common pottery export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a mild setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 26%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Canada ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+4.8%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

Common Pottery Imports

Imports into Nepal

In 2022, the amount of common pottery imported into Nepal dropped dramatically to X tons, waning by -32.7% against the year before. Overall, imports, however, posted strong growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 189% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, common pottery imports dropped rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 207% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank dramatically in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of common pottery to Nepal, with a 80% share of total imports. Moreover, common pottery imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), tenfold. Japan (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 3.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from India stood at +13.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-6.4% per year) and Japan (+28.9% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of common pottery to Nepal, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 7.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Japan, with a 2.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India stood at +17.2%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (-3.9% per year) and Japan (+31.0% per year).

The average common pottery import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 9.6% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the countries with the highest prices were India ($X per ton) and China ($X per ton), while the price for Japan ($X per ton) and Thailand ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
