Cotton Yarn Market Size in Nepal

The Nepalese cotton yarn market shrank remarkably to $X in 2022, waning by -26% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

Exports from Nepal

In 2022, cotton yarn exports from Nepal soared to X tons, with an increase of 33% compared with the previous year. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 984%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cotton yarn exports amounted to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 861%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

China (X kg), Ireland (X kg) and Germany (X kg) were the main destinations of cotton yarn exports from Nepal, together comprising 86% of total exports. The United States, Australia, Thailand and Denmark lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 7.1%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Australia (with a CAGR of +12.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest markets for cotton yarn exported from Nepal were Ireland ($X), China ($X) and Germany ($X), with a combined 68% share of total exports.

Germany, with a CAGR of +22.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average cotton yarn export price amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -19.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a notable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 446%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Australia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Singapore (+20.5%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nepal

In 2022, the amount of cotton yarn imported into Nepal reduced markedly to X tons, falling by -23.1% compared with 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +34.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, cotton yarn imports reduced sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 113% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main supplier of cotton yarn to Nepal, with a approx. 99% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India stood at +1.8%.

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of cotton yarn to Nepal.
