China (X tons) was the main destination for margarine and shortening exports from Nepal, with a 98% share of total exports. It was followed by India (X kg), with a 1.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to China stood at +12.2%.

In value terms, China ($X) remains the key foreign market for margarine and shortening exports from Nepal, comprising 97% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by India ($X), with a 2.6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to China stood at +17.4%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average margarine and shortening export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -3.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to China amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to India (+6.3%).

Imports into Nepal

In 2022, margarine and shortening imports into Nepal reduced rapidly to X tons, declining by -35.9% against the previous year. In general, imports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 256% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted markedly in the following year.

In value terms, margarine and shortening imports fell notably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 324%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then reduced sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest margarine and shortening supplier to Nepal, with a 54% share of total imports. Moreover, margarine and shortening imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), threefold.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia stood at +6.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+3.8% per year) and India (+10.2% per year).

In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of margarine and shortening to Nepal, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malaysia ($X), with an 18% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Indonesia totaled +7.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+3.3% per year) and India (+13.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average margarine and shortening import price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the average import price increased by 23% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was India ($X per ton), while the price for Malaysia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced mixed trend patterns.
