Newsprint Market Size in Nepal

In 2022, the Nepalese newsprint market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, faced a abrupt decrease. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of newsprint was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a precipitous contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 449%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint exports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 370% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The UK (X tons) was the main destination for newsprint exports from Nepal, accounting for a 100% share of total exports. It was followed by India (X kg), with a 0.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to the UK totaled -9.9%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: India (-53.6% per year) and the United States (-56.8% per year).

In value terms, the UK ($X) remains the key foreign market for newsprint exports from Nepal, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 1.3% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to the UK amounted to +2.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the United States (-47.7% per year) and India (-49.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the average newsprint export price amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the average export price increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Switzerland (+59.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nepal

In 2022, supplies from abroad of newsprint was finally on the rise to reach X tons after three years of decline. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 576% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, newsprint imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 775%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

India (X tons), Russia (X tons) and Indonesia (X tons) were the main suppliers of newsprint imports to Nepal, together accounting for 59% of total imports. Canada, South Korea, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Sweden and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Sweden (with a CAGR of +21.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, India ($X), Russia ($X) and Democratic People's Republic of Korea ($X) constituted the largest newsprint suppliers to Nepal, with a combined 59% share of total imports. South Korea, Canada, Indonesia, Sweden and Singapore lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 40%.

Sweden, with a CAGR of +18.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The average newsprint import price stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. Overall, the import price saw a slight curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average import price increased by 37% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Sweden ($X per ton), while the price for Indonesia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+2.1%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
