Piper Pepper Market Size in Nepal

In 2022, the Nepalese piper pepper market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption continues to indicate significant growth. Piper pepper consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

For the fourth year in a row, Nepal recorded decline in overseas shipments of piper pepper, which decreased by -36.3% to X tons in 2022. Overall, exports saw a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 327% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piper pepper exports declined dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 1,360%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

The United States (X tons) was the main destination for piper pepper exports from Nepal, with a 36% share of total exports. Moreover, piper pepper exports to the United States exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Japan (X kg), twofold. Australia (X kg) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 15% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the United States totaled +49.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (-6.6% per year) and Australia (+26.9% per year).

In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for piper pepper exports from Nepal, comprising 42% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Japan ($X), with a 15% share of total exports. It was followed by Australia, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +17.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Japan (+8.5% per year) and Australia (+15.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The average piper pepper export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a mild slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the average export price increased by 242% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Italy (+31.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nepal

In 2022, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of piper pepper, when their volume increased by 55% to X tons. In general, imports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 207%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, piper pepper imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 246%. Imports peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Vietnam (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of piper pepper to Nepal, with a 76% share of total imports. Moreover, piper pepper imports from Vietnam exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Indonesia (X tons), eightfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Brazil (X tons), with a 6.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Vietnam stood at +26.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+28.2% per year) and Brazil (+17.1% per year).

In value terms, Vietnam ($X) constituted the largest supplier of piper pepper to Nepal, comprising 71% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Indonesia ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with a 6.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value from Vietnam stood at +23.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Indonesia (+23.7% per year) and Brazil (+13.8% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the average piper pepper import price amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -13.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the average import price increased by 47%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Indonesia ($X per ton), while the price for the United Arab Emirates ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by India (+3.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
