Salt Market Size in Nepal
In 2022, the Nepalese salt market decreased by -1.9% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. In general, the total consumption indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +7.3% over the last decade. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced notably in the following year.
In value terms, salt exports contracted sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 647% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The UK (X tons) was the main destination for salt exports from Nepal, accounting for a 46% share of total exports. Moreover, salt exports to the UK exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Italy (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was held by Canada (X tons), with a 4.7% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to the UK stood at +279.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Italy (0.0% per year) and Canada (+5.7% per year).
In value terms, the UK ($X), Italy ($X) and Canada ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for salt exported from Nepal worldwide, together accounting for 71% of total exports.
Among the main countries of destination, the UK, with a CAGR of +288.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average salt export price stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -7.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 78% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Norway (+26.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into Nepal
In 2022, imports of salt and pure sodium chloride into Nepal reduced slightly to X tons, which is down by -2.9% on 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 78% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.
In value terms, salt imports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.8% against 2015 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, India (X tons) was the main supplier of salt to Nepal, accounting for a approx. 99.9% share of total imports.
