The exports peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato ketchup exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 926% against the previous year. The exports peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

China (X tons), Australia (X tons) and the United States (X tons) were the main destinations of tomato ketchup exports from Nepal, with a combined 90% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for China (with a CAGR of +35.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the United States ($X), Australia ($X) and China ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for tomato ketchup exported from Nepal worldwide, together accounting for 98% of total exports.

In terms of the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +29.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a perceptible expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the average export price increased by 167%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the United States ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to India ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Australia (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced a decline.

In 2022, overseas purchases of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces decreased by -11.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, tomato ketchup imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, saw a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 32%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, India (X tons) constituted the largest tomato ketchup supplier to Nepal, with a 86% share of total imports. Moreover, tomato ketchup imports from India exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, China (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Singapore (X tons), with a 3% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from India totaled +9.1%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+4.4% per year) and Singapore (+47.8% per year).

In value terms, India ($X) constituted the largest supplier of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces to Nepal, comprising 88% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by China ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Singapore, with a 4.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value from India amounted to +8.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: China (+2.8% per year) and Singapore (+51.7% per year).

In 2022, the average tomato ketchup import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 9.3%. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Singapore ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Singapore (+2.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
