Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for banana and plantain exports from the Netherlands, with a 51% share of total exports. Moreover, banana and plantain exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Belgium (X tons), fivefold. Poland (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 9.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +33.4%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+24.1% per year) and Poland (+21.9% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for bananas and plantains exports from the Netherlands, comprising 52% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Belgium ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to Germany stood at +31.5%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Belgium (+21.7% per year) and Poland (+19.9% per year).

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2022, after eight years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of bananas and plantains, when their volume decreased by -34.4% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then fell markedly in the following year.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports dropped markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 58%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Ecuador (X tons), Costa Rica (X tons) and Belgium (X tons) were the main suppliers of banana and plantain imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 59% share of total imports. Panama, Colombia, Germany, the Dominican Republic and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 34%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Panama (with a CAGR of +53.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ecuador ($X), Belgium ($X) and Costa Rica ($X) were the largest banana and plantain suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 57% share of total imports. Germany, the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Panama and Peru lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 36%.
Panama, with a CAGR of +51.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average banana and plantain import price amounted to $X per ton, almost unchanged from the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the average import price increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the Dominican Republic ($X per ton), while the price for Costa Rica ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
