For the third year in a row, the Dutch brewing dregs market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 0.9% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, enjoyed a buoyant increase. Brewing dregs consumption peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports from the Netherlands
After two years of growth, overseas shipments of brewing or distilling dregs and waste decreased by -4.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 190%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
In value terms, brewing dregs exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. Exports by Country
France (X tons) was the main destination for brewing dregs exports from the Netherlands, with a 35% share of total exports. Moreover, brewing dregs exports to France exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Spain (X tons), twofold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total exports with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to France totaled +17.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Spain (+47.7% per year) and Germany (+12.1% per year).
In value terms, France ($X) remains the key foreign market for brewing or distilling dregs and waste exports from the Netherlands, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the UK ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Spain, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value to France amounted to +20.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: the UK (+23.9% per year) and Spain (+50.9% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the average brewing dregs export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, export price indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, brewing dregs export price increased by +58.9% against 2017 indices. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major overseas markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Ireland ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) and Spain ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Belgium (+10.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of brewing or distilling dregs and waste, when their volume decreased by -28.5% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped sharply in the following year.
In value terms, brewing dregs imports shrank rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw notable growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 82% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then declined significantly in the following year.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main suppliers of brewing dregs imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 93% of total imports. Hungary and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.5%.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +51.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, the largest brewing dregs suppliers to the Netherlands were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and France ($X), with a combined 93% share of total imports. Hungary and Italy lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 4.3%.
Italy, with a CAGR of +31.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2022, the average brewing dregs import price amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.4% against the previous year. In general, import price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, brewing dregs import price increased by +3.4% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 32% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
