In 2021, after six years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of chemical contraceptive preparations based on hormones or spermicides, when their volume increased by 49% to X tons. In general, imports, however, recorded a significant decrease. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, chemical contraceptive preparations imports dropped modestly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a noticeable decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and India (X tons) were the main suppliers of chemical contraceptive preparations imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 80% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Canada, Ireland and France, which together accounted for a further 14%.
