Date Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch date market contracted remarkably to $X in 2022, waning by -58% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate moderate growth. In 2022, the average date export price amounted to $X per ton, falling by -12.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

After ten years of growth, purchases abroad of dates decreased by -13.8% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, date imports reduced slightly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a strong increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 42%. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.

In 2022, Israel (X tons) constituted the largest date supplier to the Netherlands, accounting for a 39% share of total imports. Moreover, date imports from Israel exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Tunisia (X tons), threefold. Germany (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with a 6.8% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from Israel stood at +16.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+12.8% per year) and Germany (+11.6% per year).

In value terms, Israel ($X) constituted the largest supplier of dates to the Netherlands, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with an 8.2% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 7.5% share.
