In 2021, overseas shipments of automotive lighting increased by 80% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports posted a pronounced expansion. The exports peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, automotive lighting exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a remarkable increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
The UK (X units), Belgium (X units) and Germany (X units) were the main destinations of automotive lighting exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 64% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Brazil, France, Sweden, Spain, Italy and China, which together accounted for a further 23%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +68.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, export price indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, automotive lighting export price increased by +97.6% against 2014 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 48% against the previous year. Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, supplies from abroad of automotive lighting increased by 41% to X units, rising for the sixth year in a row after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 53% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in years to come.
In value terms, automotive lighting imports surged to $X in 2021. In general, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +15.0% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Taiwan (Chinese) (X units), Germany (X units) and China (X units) were the main suppliers of automotive lighting imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 52% of total imports. These countries were followed by Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Poland, Belgium, Spain, Japan, the United States, France, Austria and Mexico, which together accounted for a further 39%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mexico (with a CAGR of +43.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average automotive lighting import price stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -16.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when the average import price increased by 14% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per unit in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Mexico ($X per unit) and Japan ($X per unit), while the price for Slovakia ($X per unit) and China ($X per unit) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mexico (-4.9%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
