In value terms, essential oils imports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed strong growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when imports increased by 73% against the previous year. Imports peaked at $X in 2021, and then dropped markedly in the following year.

Brazil (X tons), China (X tons) and Italy (X tons) were the main suppliers of essential oils imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 44% share of total imports. Germany, the United States, the UK, France, Ireland, Indonesia, Spain, Mexico, India and Argentina lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 48%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ireland (with a CAGR of +137.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average import price increased by 29%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the average import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the price for Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
