In 2022, the Dutch filter block market decreased by -18.1% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption, however, faced a abrupt setback. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, overseas shipments of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 48% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 144% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, filter block exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a slight expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 98%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Germany (X tons) was the main destination for filter block exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 49% share of total exports. Moreover, filter block exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Norway (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Spain (X kg), with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany amounted to +8.0%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Norway (+50.7% per year) and Spain (+100.3% per year).

In 2022, the average filter block export price amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -9% against the previous year. In general, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 74% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the average export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Germany ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+20.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands

In 2022, overseas purchases of filter blocks, slabs and plates of paper pulp increased by 20% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a sharp reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, filter block imports shrank significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 59%. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, the UK (X tons) constituted the largest filter block supplier to the Netherlands, with a 69% share of total imports. Moreover, filter block imports from the UK exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Poland (X tons), sevenfold. China (X tons) ranked third in terms of total imports with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from the UK totaled +18.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Poland (+11.8% per year) and China (+11.3% per year).
