Overall, exports, however, enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 193%. The exports peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 231%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Italy (X tons) and Portugal (X tons) were the main destinations of aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 58% share of total exports. The UK, India, Japan, Belgium, France, Spain and Poland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Spain (with a CAGR of +137.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Italy ($X) and the UK ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together accounting for 63% of total exports. Portugal, Belgium, France, Spain, India, Poland and Japan lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
Spain, with a CAGR of +114.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 58% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major foreign markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Japan ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Poland (+6.4%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
Aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports into the Netherlands surged to X tons in 2021, increasing by 82% on 2020. Overall, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 648%. Imports peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 210% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Belgium (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives to the Netherlands, accounting for a 88% share of total imports. Moreover, aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives imports from Belgium exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (X tons), more than tenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Germany (X tons), with a 3.9% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of volume from Belgium stood at -3.8%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+106.2% per year) and Germany (-4.2% per year).
In value terms, Belgium ($X) constituted the largest supplier of halogenated derivatives of aromatic hydrocarbons to the Netherlands, comprising 59% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by the United States ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by China, with a 12% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Belgium stood at -2.5%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+80.2% per year) and China (+5.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives import price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -14.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a tangible increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 144% against the previous year. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Japan ($X per ton), while the price for Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
