Honey Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch honey market fell to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -2.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for honey exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, honey exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Poland (X tons), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume to Belgium totaled +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+8.6% per year) and Poland (+5.4% per year).

In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X) constituted the largest markets for honey exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together comprising 52% of total exports. Romania, France, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Iceland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 31%.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined remarkably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the UK (+7.3%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, approx. X tons of honey were imported into the Netherlands; reducing by -1.5% against the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted in the following year.

China (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of honey imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 74% of total imports. Vietnam, Ukraine, New Zealand and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
