Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, industrial fatty alcohols exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate prominent growth. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and France (X tons) were the main destinations of industrial fatty alcohols exports from the Netherlands, together accounting for 53% of total exports. The United States, Italy, Singapore, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Norway lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 42%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Brazil (with a CAGR of +97.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and France ($X) appeared to be the largest markets for industrial fatty alcohols exported from the Netherlands worldwide, with a combined 51% share of total exports. These countries were followed by the United States, Italy, Russia, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, Spain and Norway, which together accounted for a further 43%.
Among the main countries of destination, Brazil, with a CAGR of +74.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average industrial fatty alcohols export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 36% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2012; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Brazil ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to the United States (+1.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of industrial fatty alcohols, when their volume decreased by -4.7% to X tons. Overall, total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +28.2% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then dropped modestly in the following year.
In value terms, industrial fatty alcohols imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, total imports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +59.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 35% against the previous year. Imports peaked in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Indonesia (X tons) constituted the largest industrial fatty alcohols supplier to the Netherlands, accounting for a 41% share of total imports. Moreover, industrial fatty alcohols imports from Indonesia exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Malaysia (X tons), twofold. The third position in this ranking was taken by the United States (X tons), with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Indonesia amounted to +14.7%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+7.7% per year) and the United States (+4.8% per year).
In value terms, Indonesia ($X) constituted the largest supplier of industrial fatty alcohols to the Netherlands, comprising 40% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malaysia ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by the United States, with a 20% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Indonesia amounted to +14.4%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Malaysia (+5.6% per year) and the United States (+5.4% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average industrial fatty alcohols import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, average import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was the UK ($X per ton), while the price for the Philippines ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
