Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather exports shrank to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 30%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Italy (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Poland (X tons) were the main destinations of bovine and equine leather exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 68% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Italy (with a CAGR of +4.2%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest markets for bovine and equine leather exported from the Netherlands were Italy ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 48% share of total exports. China, France, the UK, Portugal and Belgium lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 28%.
Among the main countries of destination, China, with a CAGR of +8.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.

The average bovine and equine leather export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -17.6% against the previous year. Overall, export price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, bovine and equine leather export price decreased by -39.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 36%. Over the period under review, the average export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was France ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Italy ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to China (+7.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Leather of Bovine and Equine Animals
Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, overseas purchases of leather of bovine and equine animals increased by 2% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 55%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bovine and equine leather imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a noticeable decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Italy (X tons) constituted the largest supplier of bovine and equine leather to the Netherlands, accounting for a 45% share of total imports. Moreover, bovine and equine leather imports from Italy exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, Brazil (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by India (X tons), with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume from Italy stood at -2.9%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Brazil (-11.2% per year) and India (-4.7% per year).
In value terms, Italy ($X) constituted the largest supplier of leather of bovine and equine animals to the Netherlands, comprising 51% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Germany ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Brazil, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value from Italy totaled -3.3%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Germany (-2.6% per year) and Brazil (-7.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The average bovine and equine leather import price stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 9.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import price indicated tangible growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, bovine and equine leather import price increased by +27.0% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The import price peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Poland ($X per ton), while the price for Thailand ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
