In 2022, overseas shipments of lemons and limes decreased by -21.6% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, posted a pronounced increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 46% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, lemon and lime exports contracted dramatically to $X in 2022. Overall, total exports indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 53%. The exports peaked at $X in 2021, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Exports by Country
Germany (X tons) was the main destination for lemon and lime exports from the Netherlands, with a 25% share of total exports. Moreover, lemon and lime exports to Germany exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Poland (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by France (X tons), with an 8.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Germany totaled +2.8%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Poland (+4.2% per year) and France (+9.1% per year).
In value terms, Germany ($X) remains the key foreign market for lemons and limes exports from the Netherlands, comprising 29% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by France ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Poland, with a 7.9% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value to Germany totaled +4.6%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: France (+14.5% per year) and Poland (+5.6% per year).

In 2022, the average lemon and lime export price amounted to $X per ton, growing by 2.7% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the average export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the average export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Russia ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Spain ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Russia (+6.6%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports into the Netherlands
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in purchases abroad of lemons and limes, when their volume decreased by -20.4% to X tons. In general, imports, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 46% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2021, and then shrank remarkably in the following year.
In value terms, lemon and lime imports declined markedly to $X in 2022. Overall, total imports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 49%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then fell notably in the following year.
Imports by Country
Brazil (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Spain (X tons) were the main suppliers of lemon and lime imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 72% of total imports. Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Germany and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Colombia (with a CAGR of +54.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Brazil ($X), South Africa ($X) and Spain ($X) were the largest lemon and lime suppliers to the Netherlands, with a combined 68% share of total imports. Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Germany and Uruguay lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 22%.
Colombia, with a CAGR of +60.7%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average lemon and lime import price amounted to $X per ton, rising by 1.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, average import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Colombia ($X per ton), while the price for Uruguay ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
