Malt Market Size in the Netherlands
In 2021, after three years of growth, there was significant decline in the Dutch malt market, when its value decreased by -17.1% to $X. Overall, the total consumption indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in overseas shipments of malt (not roasted), which increased by 29% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports recorded buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, malt exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports continue to indicate a prominent increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Belgium (X tons), Germany (X tons) and Brazil (X tons) were the main destinations of malt exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 42% share of total exports. Cambodia, Angola, Japan, South Africa, Chile, Guatemala, Cameroon, Venezuela, Ghana and Democratic Republic of the Congo lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +589.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Brazil ($X) were the largest markets for malt exported from the Netherlands worldwide, with a combined 40% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Angola, Japan, Cambodia, Chile, South Africa, Cameroon, Guatemala, Venezuela, Ghana and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 35%.
Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +594.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main countries of destination over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The average malt export price stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild downturn. Over the period under review, the average export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Average prices varied somewhat for the major export markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the countries with the highest prices were Cameroon ($X per ton) and Brazil ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Guatemala ($X per ton) and Germany ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Angola (+4.7%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced more modest paces of growth.
Malt Imports
Imports into the Netherlands
In 2021, supplies from abroad of malt (not roasted) was finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, malt imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable downturn. Imports peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Belgium (X tons), France (X tons) and Denmark (X tons) were the main suppliers of malt imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 94% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Denmark (with a CAGR of +38.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
In value terms, Belgium ($X), France ($X) and Denmark ($X) constituted the largest malt suppliers to the Netherlands, together accounting for 92% of total imports.
Denmark, with a CAGR of +39.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main suppliers over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trend patterns.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the average malt import price amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a noticeable downturn. The import price peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the highest price was recorded for prices from Germany ($X per ton) and Belgium ($X per ton), while the price for Denmark ($X per ton) and France ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Denmark (+0.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
