Manuka Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch manuka market fell modestly to $X in 2022, waning by -2.5% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Manuka consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Exports from the Netherlands

In 2022, overseas shipments of manuka decreased by -21.1% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a buoyant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 116% against the previous year. The exports peaked at X tons in 2021, and then dropped notably in the following year.

In value terms, manuka exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 118% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined rapidly in the following year.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X tons) was the main destination for manuka exports from the Netherlands, accounting for a 42% share of total exports. Moreover, manuka exports to Belgium exceeded the volume sent to the second major destination, Germany (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Poland (X tons), with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume to Belgium totaled +11.1%. Exports to the other major destinations recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Germany (+8.6% per year) and Poland (+5.4% per year).

In value terms, the largest markets for manuka exported from the Netherlands were Belgium ($X), Germany ($X) and Poland ($X), with a combined 52% share of total exports. Romania, France, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Iceland and the UK lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 31%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Sweden, with a CAGR of +65.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, the average manuka export price amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -21.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the average export price increased by 22%. The export price peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major external markets. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per ton), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

Imports into the Netherlands

In 2022, approx. X tons of manuka were imported into the Netherlands; with a decrease of -1.5% compared with 2021 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 30%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

In value terms, manuka imports shrank to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then shrank in the following year.

Imports by Country

China (X tons), Belgium (X tons) and Germany (X tons) were the main suppliers of manuka imports to the Netherlands, with a combined 74% share of total imports. Vietnam, Ukraine, New Zealand and Bulgaria lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 15%.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Ukraine (with a CAGR of +44.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major supplying countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Germany ($X per ton), while the price for China ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
