Mdf Market Size in the Netherlands

The Dutch MDF market shrank dramatically to $X in 2021, waning by -15.8% against the previous year. For the fifth consecutive year, the Netherlands recorded growth in shipments abroad of MDF, which increased by 30% to X cubic meters in 2021. In general, exports saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 87%. The exports peaked in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, MDF exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total exports indicated a moderate increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +71.0% against 2014 indices. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Belgium (X cubic meters), Germany (X cubic meters) and the UK (X cubic meters) were the main destinations of MDF exports from the Netherlands, with a combined 68% share of total exports. These countries were followed by Norway, France, Iceland, Switzerland, Denmark and Spain, which together accounted for a further 9.7%.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main countries of destination, was attained by Switzerland (with a CAGR of +63.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and the UK ($X) constituted the largest markets for MDF exported from the Netherlands worldwide, together comprising 63% of total exports. These countries were followed by Denmark, Norway, France, Iceland, Spain and Switzerland, which together accounted for a further 17%.

In terms of the main countries of destination, Iceland, with a CAGR of +42.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average MDF export price stood at $X per cubic meter in 2021, with an increase of 4.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a abrupt curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when the average export price increased by 45% against the previous year. The export price peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices for the major overseas markets. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Denmark ($X per cubic meter), while the average price for exports to Belgium ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was recorded for supplies to Denmark (+7.1%), while the prices for the other major destinations experienced mixed trend patterns.

In 2021, overseas purchases of MDF decreased by -8.7% to X cubic meters for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year rising trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 36%. Imports peaked at X cubic meters in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, MDF imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, total imports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +87.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

Germany (X cubic meters), Belgium (X cubic meters) and Portugal (X cubic meters) were the main suppliers of MDF imports to the Netherlands, together accounting for 80% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main suppliers, was attained by Belgium (with a CAGR of +13.5%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($X), Belgium ($X) and Ireland ($X) were the largest MDF suppliers to the Netherlands, together comprising 76% of total imports. These countries were followed by Spain, Portugal, Luxembourg, France and Austria, which together accounted for a further 18%.

Among the main suppliers, Luxembourg, with a CAGR of +14.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the average MDF import price amounted to $X per cubic meter, rising by 32% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight slump. Over the period under review, average import prices reached the maximum at $X per cubic meter in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Spain ($X per cubic meter), while the price for Portugal ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Austria (+7.8%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced more modest paces of growth.
